I just "upgraded" to XP Home Edition. However, I now get
the wonderful option at startup to run in EITHER Windows
ME or XP. This is taking up lots of memory to house two
operating systems. Do I uninstall Windows ME? Did I
screw up the XP installation? I intended to simply move
off of ME and onto the XP operating system. Any
suggestions?
Yes, you screwed up. You must have selected the "new install" option. If you
have only one partition, you have created a dual boot with XP and Me on the
same partition. This is not a good configuration as you will have problems
with applications that install to the same folders for both OS.
If you have done nothing other than install XP, you can probably back out of
the situation to gain access to the Me installation without too much damage.
I would suggest you backup all important data you can access to removable
media before making any changes to rectify your situation.
If this was a fresh install and no applications were installed to the XP
installation, you can probably boot to Me and remove the Documents and
Settings folder and the folder Windows XP was installed to. This will
usually be a variation of Windows like Winnt, or Windows.01, etc. After
deleting these files, shut down and reboot with a
Win Me startup disk. When you reach the dos prompt, type sys c then hit
enter and the system should boot into Me. After Me loads, insert the XP cd
and Run the XP setup from Windows Me and select "upgrade". If you have
problems after XP is setup, you should then do a clean install.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
