I have XP Home and Earthlink DSL ISP.
If I get a 2nd XP computer and a DSL Router, do I need to tell
Earthlink so they can charge me for a network - or will it work if I
just plug the 2 computers into the Router and do whatever setup that
is required by the Router?
Or is this the wrong place to ask this?
Thanks much for any answer.

Hi,

Get a router, you don't need to tell Earthlink anything. You just need to
know if you have a static or dynamic IP, or if they use PPPoE to configure
the router.

Did you already get some kind of DSL modem or router from Earthlink? If
yes, then you have to decide which device you are going to use. My ISP
(covad) suggests that you buy their device, but it also has a router
built in, so no need for the extra router. What about you?

I currently have Earthlink DSL modem - DSL in and Ethernet out to
computer.
So I assume that I will need a 2nd DSL modem to plug into the Router,
since it is a DSL rounter - not an Ethernet router, unless I buy a
combination Router/Modem.
But in any case, will I need 2 DSL modems?
I have a dynamic IP and am not sure I understand about the PPPoE.
What puzzles me the most is how are the in-out streams interpreted as
going to-from one computer or the other?
Any comments appreciated.

Hi,

All you need is the router. Connect the ethernet output from the DSL modem
to the input port (or uplink) of the router. Then connect your pc to one of
the router lan ports. You may need to open your browser to
http://192.168.0.1 to configure the router at first.
