Hi You all
We are finally getting DSL in our nieghborhood, its about time.(we live out
in the sticks)
They are going to offer a DSL modem for us to buy, don't know what brand or
model.
If i just go out and buy my own,What is a good brand and model?
I would like something that i can turn off and on manually, don't know if
that is possable or not.
I read these news groups a little and hear a lot about routers that act as
firewalls also.
We have 2 computers in the house ,(different rooms) can i go wireless to
include the 2nd pc?
Don't know what else to ask, this is all new to me.
Thank you

Dont buy your own xDSL modem !

Some ISPs need spedcific hardware since their are variations to the DSL protocol. For
example; ADSL vs SDSL and ADSL G.lite. Verizon requites Westell brand modems.

Futher DSL questions should be asked in

Don't go wireless networking until you fully understand the security ramifications of "War
Driving" and you have specific knowledge on properly securing wireless. Until then, I
suggest a wired Router. Then you can share resources more securely as you learn about
wireless security. I suggest a Router that offers both a four port 10/100Mb/s Ethernet
switch and Wireless connectivity.

Depeding on the ISP you may be provided with just a DSL Modem or a DSL Modem+Router device.
I suggest contacting your xDSL ISP and find out more information from them.

Thank you David
I will do that, Quest is our phone provider and offering the DSL, so i will
check with them.
Thanks again.

Suggest you buy the modem they are selling.
If you have any problems, then there tech support will be familiar with the
modem.

Don't know why you want to turn the modem off.
If you go the second computer, do you want to have to go to the first
computer and turn the modem on?

Yes, getting a wireless router will let the second computer use the DSL.

ISP's do not like supporting equipment that they themselves have not
provided..

You can do it with Cable ISPs as long as the Cable Modems are DOCSIS compliant and the Cable
ISP supports the DOCSIS standard.

Hi Carl, well I live in Salt Lake City and also use Qwest as my dsl
provider, and like you I was offered the option of buying my modem/router or
renting for 5.00 a month. I chose to rent because I didn't know what brand or
how good the m/r was.
Well here in Salt Lake the modem I was given the Actiontec Dsl modm with
Wireless Gateway, has worked for a year now and I have never reset it and it
is on 24/7. I use it 's wireless function for my laptop and so does another
person iin the building, for my wireless card I use D-Link air plus
DWL-G630. I have no complaints with either product. Good luck

Hi ManyBeers
I like your name there, espicially coming from Salt Lake City.
Cool
Thank you much for the reply,I guess that is what i will do to,I guess we
will get the option to rent or buy.
I got a call today from Qwest, now they have backed up our availability date
to late Feb instead of this month.
That was kind of earitateing.
We live out in the Brusk in east centeral Mn. and our dialup only hooks up
at 26.4,slow,slow.
Thanks again
