DSL connectivity problem

I'm attempting to connect a new XP system to a Sprint DSL
account via Xytel 645 router, but the system is sending
out a continous signal (connect & activity light blink
constantly) rendering the connection intermittent.

Sprint has checked out the line and the connection works
fine on Windows 98. Sprint claims it's an XP "virus"
(which doesn't make any sense, as I've tried three
separate new XP systems).

I've tried this by both direct connect to the router (via
null reverse-wiring cable), as well as through a switch on
a smoothly-working (2-system, peer-to-peer) network. I've
manually assigned IPs & auto-configured IPs. I can
actually get on-line, but it's intermittent at best. A
really interesting factor is that with a simultaneous dial-
up connection running (via modem in the same system), the
intermittence goes away, but once I disconnect the dial-up
the intermittence returns.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

This could well be the blaster virus, or a variant of it. You should run an
anti-virus. It could have well affected your machine immediately after you
plugged it in, and would have the symptoms that you described. (You can also
look in task manager whether a program called: "msblaster.exe" is running).

Also, turn your firewall on. If the virus is already on your system this
won't help though, but it will prevent you from getting it again.

Thanks...a Sophos virus check found both Wybot & Welchia
infections in both network PCs. It took a while to clean
everything out & exe all Windows critical updates...but it
eventually took care of the problem.

At least now I know what to look for when it happens again.

Thanks for the support!
