Use a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41 and that becomes a moot point.
 
Yes, with a modem with a CAT5 cable, or a router. You can do PPPoE or just
run it with DHCP from the modem.

If it's a USB connection, maybe/maybe not.

Assuming you have a DSL Modem/Router which connects to the computer via
ethernet it should work with anything: vista, xp, Linux, MAC, Solaris . . .
 
I have no trouble with Verizon dsl. Unplugged the RJ45 cable from my XP
box, plugged it into the Vista Basic laptop, nothing happened. Powered
down and rebooted i.e., cold boot, and Vista instantly made the connection.
