DSL Cables -- Quad 4 or better?

Here I am again with another beginner's question.

My ISP will provide micro filters for each of the telephones in the
house. As I understand it, each filter will degrade the performance of
DSL slightly. I am considering installing an outdoor splitter near the
NID. Several sites on the web mention not using the normal Quad 4 cable
for the DSL line and suggest using either CAT5 or CAT3. Now the
questions.

First, What are the group's thoughts on CAT 5 vs. Quad 4 for DSL?

Second. If I choose CAT5, How do I connect it to the DSL modem which
will have, I assume, only a normal telephone jack? ( I forget the
nomenclature of such a thing at the moment.)

I appreciate any answers, advice or comments.

Thank you.

Just install the phone filters where you have phones and connect the
DSL modem without the filter and be done. Going through all this high
tech hoopla is not going to gain you anything, unless you are going to
install CAT 5 all the way back to your CO (range can be between 0 to
18000 feet), as most phone companies use the normal 2 pair (Quad 4)
from the pole to the house drop, and twisted copper back to the CO.
