I have DSL and it is always on at start up. i do not see any choice to have this at start up. my brother has DSL and has to click an icon to start his online connection. The problem is that even though i do not have a browser open there is always activity on the network card. I only have the 1 PC and any activity is defetly the Internet. Sometimes my PC hangs until whatever is going on in the background with the network is finished. please explain how to correct this.

thanx in advance.

"Always" sounds ominous. Your computer could be accessing the net
legitimately without an open browser. You might have software that
checks the web for updates. I have anti-virus, firewall, and
anti-spyware stuff that does that. I also sometimes have a VPN client
open that shows net activity even when I'm not doing anything.

But like I said, "always" doesn't sound good. I've twice had a lot of
unexplained net activity, both times it was the Nachia worm (a variant
the second time).

DSL is always on unless you're using PPPoE or something like that, which I
suspect is what your brother has. The first thing to do is try and identify
the traffic and make sure it's not a virus or worm, but if you want to
disable all Internet access when you're not at the computer just disable the
network card. Then when you're ready to use it again just reenable the card
and you should be ready to go.
