DSL access directly but not thru router

My desktop can access the Internet as long as it's connected directly to my
DSL router.

When I connect it to my router (wired, if it matters), SOMETIMES it can go
to the 'net, but sometime it can't. I'll try for a page, and I'll get that
generic message that "the page cannot be displayed." BUT, the router is
connecting to the 'net, because my other computer, (wireless, if it
matters), has no problem.

It's not the router, because I've replaced it. (I.e., present computer,
different router, same location .)

I've even switched computers, so I don't see how it can be the computer or
the card. (I.e, different computer, present router, same location.)

The computer used to be at a different location, (with a different router),
and the was never a similar problem. (I.e., present computer, different
router, different location.)

I've tried as many different combinations as I can think of, and the only
common element seems to be that if it's in my house, the computer has a
problem. But it can't be the DSL modem, because my notebook can access
throught the router.

Any ideas? I'm getting tired of my wife complaining that she can't get
online "AGAIN."

Thanks!

perhaps your power saving features are turning off your NIC ? (default
windows will power down your nic if not in use)

if you try a site and can't connect ...if you wait a second or two and try
again , does it connect ?

Waiting doesn't help; rebooting doesn't help; turning off the router and
then back on doesn't help.

Cursing and swearing doesn't help either.
I haven't tried kicking the box yet, though.

Thanks!

Ken,

When you get "the page cannot be displayed." on the wired computer, can you
access that same page from the wireless computer? Is there any pattern which
pages can't be accessed? Can you access other pages from the wired computer?

Are both computers setup with the same DNS configuration?

When you get that error on the wired computer, try finding out the ip address of
the website you can't reach.

Do an NS Lookup for the website with problems, using either of the following:
<http://www.all-nettools.com/toolbox> (<http://216.92.207.177/toolbox>)
<http://www.dnsstuff.com/> (<http://69.2.200.183>)

Once you have an ip address for a problem website:
1) Browse by name;
2) Browse by ip address;
3) Ping by name;
4) Ping by ip address.

Report back here success / failure (and exact text of error) of each of the
tests. Once we know that, we can decide what to check next.

When I have the problem, the wired computer CANNOTreach ANY page. Not a
one. It can't ping anything. Nothing. Nada. Zip. It can, however, log
into the router.

At the same time, the wireless CAN reach ANYTHING. Anything and everything.

Try a different cable. Try a different port on the router.

It usually turns out to be something simple, doesn't it? I'm pretty sure I
tried a different port, but not sure if I changed the cable. My next step
was going to be to put in the spare wireless card, but I'll try the cable
first.

Thanks.
