When using remote desktop to connect to a windows XP SP1 pc the connection
will appear to briefly establish before the connection fails.
On the client a DrWatson 4097 error is logged. The application,
\??\C:\Windows\system32\winlogon generated an application error.

Winlogon version 5.1.2600.1106

We have also enabled via group policies for “Offer Remote Assistance†to be
enabled for IT administrators.
Trying to offer remote assistance fails. No error logged on client but on
the machine offering remote assistance “The remote server machine does not
exist or is unavailable†error occurs.

Unfortunately this problem is affecting a large batch of machine built with
the same ghost image.

Another batch built slightly differently work perfectly.

One last puzzling issue is that if the client generates a request for
assistance in the form of a file _ remote assistance works perfectly.

It sounds like adware called wsaupdater.exe replacing userinit.exe in the
registry of the client.
