I am using Windows XP Media Edition. I was trying to drag a file from one
folder to another using windows explorer. I was unable to do it. I was able
to CUT & then Paste it to the new folder.

Any reason why this isn't working? I believe it should work - shouldn't it?

Two things to check:

1. If you have a Dell, uninstall the Dell Media Experience from
Add/Remove Programs. This is a known issue with this useless program.

2. If #1 isn't applicable, look on the Start Menu's properties and make
sure Drag/Drop is enabled.

Yes I am using a Dell - I am not seeing anything in add/remove pgms like
that. Could it be under a different name? Is there another way to get rid of
it? I checked that drop & drag is enabled - it is!
Very strange........ Hope we can find a way around it.

No, it is called "Dell Media Experience" and is installed on all new
Dells. So look again.

Also, if drag/drop worked before ask yourself what changed between the
time things worked and the time they didn't. Install any new software?

Can't say it did or didn't work before. Computer is only a month old.
The only Dell things I have in Add/Remove are: Dell Cineplayer; Dell digital
jukebox driver; Dell driver reset tool; Dell game console; Dell support 3.1
and Dell system restore.
I have a Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition Installer or Windows Media
Connect.
Really I have nothing else that is even close to what you are saying I
should Have.

Now this is probably a stupid question - BUT should <y Documents & all the
folders with that folder be Read Only?

The read-only attribute isn't applicable to folders in XP. If you look
at the setting again, you'll see that "Read Only" is greyed out,
indicating that it isn't available. It means nothing.

I'm sorry but I just don't have enough information to tell you why this
isn't working. Perhaps you should have a professional or knowledgeable
friend (someone who is *really* knowledgeable and not just saying s/he
is) take a look. Often someone who can actually *see* the machine will
be able to spot the issue immediately where people only reading a
sketchy description won't.

The read-only attribute is NOT greyed out! THere is a green dot there.
I'm not sure what other info you are looking for that I haven't provided to
you?

That still doesn't mean it's set for read only. The read only attribute
has no meaning for folders in XP. It only impacts files in that folder.
