Drop down menu doesn't show on right click on item

When right clicking on a basic item (email, contact, appointment...) the drop down menu doesn't show up in Outlook 2003! Drop down menus, however, do work if more items are selected. HELP!!!

Have you selected the "Folder" view first?

Although I don't exactly understand what you mean by "folder" view, I think this is not the cause of the problem. I have tried various views and it is always the same. I have the following situation: on the left pane there is either "calendar", "mail", "folder list" or whatever, and on the right the corresponding list of items, for example emails. Right clicking on an object in the left pane (or in the menu) opens a drop down, but right clicking on an object in the right pane, like a specific email (or appointment or task) does nothing (except the hourglass sometimes shows for a moment).
