Drop Down form field

I am adding a new drop down list to my word document. I'm typing A & C into the form field and click Add, close the window and protect the document. When I click on the drop down field to add A & C, the ampersand is gone. It appears as A C. I have tried different symbols (!@#$%^*()) and all of them work, except for the ampersand. Can you assist me with this?
