drop box input

I have Window xp Prof on two computers. When I pick a drop dox, I can type
in some of the letter/numbers and it will pop in the box or near the item.

on the other computer, ONLY first letter/number of the drop list will work.

is there a setting to change this?

I want to be able to type in more than one letter/number.

This behavior is entirely dependent on the application implementing
the drop-down box, it's not standard. Are the two drop-down boxes on
the two machines in the same place in the same application? Maybe
there's a configuration option in the application somewhere?

the applications are the same, and it's happen in all applications.
I may be calling a drop box wrong. it's when you have a box with a arrow,
you pick the arrow and a list of items showup, you use the keybaord. by press
a key the cursor will drop that locations, continuing keybaord will use the
next input for the next word. expamle:

1111
1122
1222
1245
1234
enter 1, will drop you to 1111
enter 11, will drop you to 1111
enter 122, will drop you to 1222
enter 124, will drop you to 1245
