Do the "disks" work in a different machine ? , if so replace the device
in your machine.

Try to boot the computer from that drive (using a working boot cd).. If it
doesn;t work then this is a hardware problem so replace the drive or post in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware
 
Will it read other CD's? Get a can of dry air and spray inside the CD ROM.
You may have dust in it. Check the Add Remove Hardware and see if it has a
yellow mark on it? If so remove the device and re-start you computer.
 
i dont have any recovery disks. my husband never made any.
