I have windows XP home edition on my laptop, a few weeks ago i had to take it
into Harvey Norman because i had a whole heap of viruses and trojans and the
like. However there were so many that they had to completely wipe my
computer, but now when i set a picture as my background it won't display it
at all. All i see is a blank screen until i shut down my computer then it
will display the picture. A friend of mine said it might be something to do
with my driver? but i have no idea what that is or how to fix it if they're
right. So If anybody knows what i should/could do please, please help me.

A driver is a program which is written for specific hardware. It provides
Windows the necessary instructions to work properly with the hardware.

Your friend was referring to a video driver which would be necessary to
allow Windows to properly display the graphics on the screen.

I do have a couple questions. Can you see the icons and text on your
desktop? Do they look normal or are they distorted in any way?

If nothing is wrong accept the picture you are trying to set as your desktop
wallpaper, then this is not a driver issue. I would be more suspicious of
the picture you are attempting to set as wallpaper.

Also, try right-clicking the desktop and select properties. Click the
Settings tab. Look at the Screen resolution and Color quality. If you have
several options to choose from in these areas then your video driver is
working properly. Otherwize, you are probably not using the correct driver.

If you do need a driver, you will need to know what kind of video card is in
the laptop in order to locate the proper driver. Usually this is dependant
on the manufacturer of the laptop. Laptop video cards are typically
proprietary and installed by the manufacturer at the factory. Your laptop
may have come with a CD which contains drivers or software to restore the
laptop.

Why don't you take it back to Harvey Norman and ask why he/they didn't fix
it properly?..

Presumably, they also advised use of a firewall and anti-virus program?..
