I have installed a new device driver, the "Synaptics
human input software update released on August 04 2003",
downloaded from the Microsoft Windows Update page, on my
IBM Thinkpad R40, running Windows XP Pro. Since doing
so, every time my system is rebooted I get a pop-up
window stating:

Information about your Synaptics Poi...
----------
This device driver has not been certified by Synaptics
Software Quality Assurance.

To eliminate this message, please contact Synaptics
for a certification signature file of for a certified
distribution of this software package.

Unfortunately, the Synaptics website does not provide any
technical support contact information.

Any advice?

Hi there. I don't have a solution for you, unfortunately. I'm
experiencing the same problem. I get this error, and when I go to the
mouse control panel I get a RUNDLL error:

An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\main.cpl", Mouse"

Do you also get this error?

FYI: I'm using the trackpad and an external Logitech USB mouse.

Here you go, the drivers are listed here:

ftp://ftp.synaptics.com/pub/drivers/

Ramboi,

Thanks, but I already went there. When I tried to
install the driver from that site I got a message saying
that a newer version of the driver was already installed
and that I should uninstall the current version first.
Unfortunately, the installed version does not show up in
the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel, so I can't
uninstall it.

Ramboi,

Thanks, I seem to have fixed the problem. The Device
Manager did not seem to list this driver (or if it did, I
couldn't recognize it). But by updating the mouse
driver, I was able to get back to the original driver.
