Hi,

I setup a friend's pc from scratch, now we have this problem.
Video performance is slooowww, ATi videocard driver has
exclamationmark, Code 10, device does not start, WHY !?

From scratch I installed WinXP PRO, latest motherboard drivers,
DirectX 9c and all updates except SP2.
WinXP included ATi driver should work but doesn't.
Remove and reinstall driver didn't solve the issue.
Searched MS KB and ATi KB but at no avail.

Any clues, video performance in horrible now ?

TIA,
John7

System:
Asus A7N8X-X
ATi 264VT2 Mach64 VT2 2MB PCI <-----
256MB
20GB HD
No-name 52x DVD-rom
Artec 48/12/48 CD-writer

If the board has on-board video,it needs to be disabled thru device mgr.,
then shut-off computer,install card,restart,install software/drivers,disable-
uninstall on-board again,then reboot to install software/drivers.Also,windows
update installs the ati catalyst w/o the control-panel version,xp runs
terrible
with this,go to ati.com and install 5.12 or newest with control-panel
version.

John,

Is this graphics chip/card built into the ASUS motherboard?

If so get drivers from Asus not www.ati.com.

If this is a PCI card go to www.ati.com and check what drivers you should be
using.

2 MB VRAM (1996/1997 vintage) will be slow since the standard is about 128MB
AGP now.

Just a note. I added a video card to an HP Pavilian 8750C with onboard 2
meg video one time. The onboard video could not be disabled in the bios.
Yes, I thought this was rather odd, too. Had to disable it in the Control
Panel. Like you said, check the motherboard manual.

Thx for responding.

ATi 264VT2 mach64 2MB is on a separate PCI card.
ATi site advised to use WinXp build-in ATi drivers.
They are loaded but signal Code 10 'Device cannot start'.
Slow video caused by missing a working driver.

What can I do?

John7

Video not onboard but on separate PCI card.
According to ATi.com Catalyst drivers not intended for
old ATi 264VT2 Mach64 VT 2MB PCI

Will Catalyst driver work then?
Any other suggestions on Code 10 'Device not starting' ?

The video card is a PCI card.

According to ATI website the drivers for this card should be on the WinXP
cdrom.

See:
http://www.ati.com/support/products/pc/mach64/mach64gxctdrivers.html
http://www.ati.com/support/products/pc/mach64/winxp/mach64winxpdrivers.html

Also see this page to determine if this is a Built by ATI or Powered by ATI.
If your card is Powered by ATI this might not be the correct place to
download drivers (see the card builders site).
http://www.ati.com/support/identify/index.html

If WinXP cd's drivers are still the correct for the card - remove any
listing for ATI in Add/Remove Programs, any reference to video card in
Device Manager. Then instead of rebooting go to Add/Remove Hardware and
manually point to the cdrom for a place to look for drivers for the card
that is detected. Also take a look in the Registry for any reference to ATI
and delete them - BACKUP THE REGISTRY BEFORE ANY CHANGES.

See the following for Code 10
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310123

Is it possible the card is defective?

Don't forget this card is quite limited. The only kind of games you should
be able to play is cereal box games.

Thx for responding.

Checked before: card is genuine ATi product (102 p/n)
Drivers on WinXP CD should work but don't.
Version numbers match to ATi's info.

I already renewed driver in Device Manager,
by manual deletion and re-detection and
by reinstall through Hardware Wizzard
(automatically and 'I select from location / list')
No luck so far.

I guess you are right, the card might be defective
Better have it replaced and enjoy the extra performance.

No, the video card is too old for the Catalyst drivers to support it. The
Catalyst drivers mainly support most of the newer RAEDON based cards.

Check in the BIOS so as to see which VGA card is selected to be
"INIT"ialized first. If it is see to AGP, then this may have been your
problem.

The was initialized first in BIOS but nevertheless still failed.
I got fed up with the card and and bought a new one.
