My PC is crashing and XP tells me that it seems to be
caused by a file called kmixer.sys I presume that this is
a driver. How can I find out what it is used for and if I
can find it can I delete it and wait for a component to
stop working without damaging anything?

Hi,

Yes, it's a soundcard file. Expand a new copy. Start/run msconfig, click on
"expand file" (general tab)

File to expand: kmixer.sys
From: X:\I386\driver.cab
To: %windir%\system32\drivers

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive (you need your WinXP CD
for this), change it accordingly. If your system was preinstalled, you may
find this instead on the hard drive under C:\Windows\I386. If so, change the
"from" line accordingly. Reboot when finished.

Try looking at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314451 and see if this
gives you any ideas. You can look for that file on your hard drive, right
click it and see if there are any interesting properties listed. Sometimes
the file will list the manufacturer. If it does you can go to their site and
get a new driver.
