After removing and reinstalling the latest software and driver for an HP
ScanJet 4300C on Windows XP SP2, the end of the driver installation wizard
states that the driver is not installed and more specifically says: "Class
installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device." The
software, driver and this device had been working fine for months. But now I
can't install a new driver; I can't use the old one. I tried uninstalling,
reinstalling, rebooting, different driver versions, etc., but I get this
error every time. I can find a lot of hits on the web for this error, but no
solutions other than that it's an OS, not device problem.

How can I get XP to accept the driver?

control panel/system/hardware/driver signing

What option is is set to?

Thanks for the response. It's set to Warn. And it's working properly. The
driver is an unsigned driver and when prompted, I click "Continue Anyway."
I've also tried just choosing the driver that was previously used. (It's
listed if I use the "I will choose the driver" option.) No good.

I think I'm hitting a bug, but I need to get around it.

Hello - Look in c:\windows\setupapi.log
for more info. It seems some had luck with uninstalling/
reinstalling all USB related items.
Some had problems related to the INF files and missing
function dependencies.
Check out googles advanced search and see what others did:

Good luck

Thank you!

I was trying to install the scanner to the parallel port, but we did have a
USB HP printer installed. I deleted the printer drivers and let the machine
redetect the printer and scanner. I then was finally able to successfully
update the scanner driver to what we needed. Whew - problem solved!
