I have 3 computers on my home LAN. One is running WinXP the other two
Win98se. I have tried to remove all of the drive sharing from all of
the computers. the 2 Win98 machines work fine but the XP machine
refuses
to update the list of drives available and still show that the drives
on the 2 Win98 machines are still there. If I click on any of the
nonexistant drives XP will lock up trying to find the drive that is
not there. Help please.

Thanks, Rob

Hello Bilbo Baggins,
(nice name :))

If you have recently updated to SP2 try turning the firewall off and then
seeing if you can connect. If when its off you can network fine then you
will have to go in and alter the firewall settings so you can network and
receive/send IMC commands. If you dont have SP2 make sure that's your
shared folders are under 12charecters.

My XP machine is new, got it last weekend, so it has always had sp2.
It was installed at the factory. Since I have a hardware firewall in
the router and I run zonealarm on the other two machines I have never
turned the windows firewall on. I wanted to understand more about it
brfore I let microsoft have even more control of my life.

As I said the drive sharing worked fine, but now I am trying to turn
it off. That is where the problem is. XP is not reanlyzing the list of
available computer on the network. In fact XP even showes the other
two computers as being available when they are turned off.

I was not worried about total file sharing between the machines last
weekend since the kids are grown and gone and it is just the wife and
I . However my stepson has decided that he is comming home to get his
head straightened out, and that worries me. (computer security, that
is)

Any suggestions would be appreciated, Rob
