Please help!
My internal card reader drive letters do not show up on explorer. I've
checked cable connection on motherboard.
Drives are not listed in disk management. I can access the drives through
DOS. Did a last resort and reinstalled XP (groan) and the drives showed up in
explorer. But as soon as I updated XP through Windows Update (didn't get as
far as Service Pack 2 yet), they disappeared again!

Try reinstalling the USB ports. To reinstall the USB port, you have to first
uninstall the USB port and then reinstall it. Perform these steps to
uninstall the USB port:

1. Save and close all programs that are currently running.
2. Click Start, select Shut Down, and choose Restart the computer.
3. Press the F8 function key or the Ctrl key when the computer is
booting(before the Windows logo). This will display the Windows Startup
menu.
4. Select option 3 to load Windows in Safe mode.
5. After Windows loads in Safe mode, right-click the My Computer icon
and select Properties.
6. Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.
7. In the Device Manager Window, double-click the Universal Serial Bus
controllers.
8. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller
and select Uninstall.
9. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

NOTE: Repeat steps 8 and 9 until all the devices under Universal
Serial Bus Controller are removed.

The USB port is now uninstalled.

Now, restart the system. The system will automatically detect and reinstall
the USB port.

I hope this helps.

Already tried doing that. After removing all USB controllers, Windows would
hang on Logo screen, couldn't even get into safe mode, had to do a last good
configuration to be able to restart.

Tried removing USB controllers 1 at a time, Windows reinstalled them as they
were found, still no joy on drive letters. Card Reader seems to point to an
item in Device Manager: USB DFU Adapter. Found this out by unplugging card
reader. Any idea what this is?
