After re-installing Windows-XP pro on a new machine, I noticed that my hard
drive had been allocated letter F:.

Before you say anything, it is installed on the primary ide-channel as the
first drive (both a manual check on the motherboard and ribbons, and
checking the BIOS and all settings confirm this fact).

It isnt causing a problem, per say... but I am a tad curious as to WHY it
happened and if anyone else has come accross a similar "problem"....

Hi,

It's a known problem if a zip or tape drive is connected to the system
during installation. Just look at what device got the "C" designation. The
solution, however, is to detach that device and start over. You cannot
change the drive letter assigned to the system partition otherwise.

My drive letters changed after I added, removed or partitioned a drive

Thats no surprise though to be fair...

Yeah... I have got a zip drive installed, and it was designated as C:.

I re-assigned it and my CD and DVD drives to later letters as I prefer my HD
as the first drive in explorer... but like I say, I was under the impression
that Windows would be taking the drives in turn as they were in the actual
bios and/or cable selections...

Guess Microsoft decided to do things thier own way... AGAIN!
