I need some advice as to replacing my hard drive on XP (in the case of failure).
I have drive image 7 and a backup of my "C" drive, using drive image 7, however i seem confused as i researched a lot about replacing a hard drive.
I think some user's of drive image may help?

1. Do i need to format a new H/D first, before using drive image "restore" ? Or does the "image" already copy the original format (NTFS) to the new drive.

2. Partitions, I have 2 backups, one of the recovery partition (FAT 32), and one of the main partition (NTFS). Again, do i need to recreate the "Partitions" on the new drive, to restore both image's onto a new drive.

3. Master boot records (MBR). This function on drive image is optional and is "recommended for advanced users only" , WHY? I would of thought MBR records where necessary? and do i need this option.

The help files with drive image don't explain this very well, and the other resources only concern with a re-install of windows on a new hard drive, hence the reasons i ask about formating and partitioning using drive image.
I think using imaging software is easy enough if you understand the basics however this is all new to me.
I did'nt get a windows CD, instead i have a recovery partition.

Again, many thanks, if anyone could clarify some of this

Thanks anyway, i just need a bit of guidance. Hard disks are something i don't know much about and since iv'e no CD to re-install with, im a bit dependant on this imaging software.
I feel confident enough to change a hard drive and understand about jumper settings etc.
I only need some practical advice about drive image.

Pop the DI CD in, if this is a "downloaded" version, make your own CD. Make sure your BIOS is set to 'boot' from CDROM, follow the instructions from the 'wizard', (best to have your "back-up" on a second HD, tho CDs or DVDs will do) ... the end.

It does not matter if you have 'formatted' or not, DI will do it for you on a new drive. You can "move up" to a higher capacity drive, again DI will do it all for you.

Thanks for the advice i wasn't sure about the formating. I have the backup on my external drive.
I have already changed the bios and checked that it will boot from CD.
