Drive duplication

After installing a 160GB drive on a Promise controller,
the drive is listed as drive D and Z (in order to install
and format the new drive, I had to choose a different
drive letter than D.) The old drive that I am replacing
only showed up as drive D -- even now if I put it back
in.

The extra drive (D) does not show up in the Computer
Management window under "Disk Management."

Also the system C drive is now unnamed in this window.

What's the deal, and how can I correct this?

Thanks much.

Drive letters are generally 'recorded' onto the Drive by XP, not dynamically assigned as in 98; this is a performance issue.

To change drive letters [and remeber if you installed an application or game in the old 'D Drive' windows expects to find it there and nowhere else] you need to go to Disk Management.

Click START> Control Panel> Administrative Tools> COmputer Management
from this window choose Disk Management

That's exactly what I did, I used Disk Management
to "add" and then format the new drive. Problem is that
the drive is being duplicated (perhaps "ghosted" is a
better way of putting it) in "My Computer" so that it
shows up as two drives (both of whose contents are
identical) -- Drive D and Drive Z.

I only have two hard drives installed, but three are
showing up, of which one is a duplication of itself, but
the "ghost" image is only seen in "My Computer."

However only Drive Z is present in Disk Management. And
as I also mentioned, the System Volume (C) is now unnamed
in the console's window. When I take the new drive out
and put the old drive back in, it only shows up once --
as Drive D.

Is that clearer? And thanks much for your prompt
response.
