I'm about to replace my SATA drive with another. The one I have has a couple
of mapped out bad sectors and I want to replace it before it gets worse. I'm
not adverse to backing everything up and reinstalling Windows, but I'd like to
just clone it if possible. There are three NTFS5.1 (XP) partitions on the
drive.

Any freeware to do the job? Or even, one of those Linux distros on a CD, with
the required tools?

Try DriveImage XML:
http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm

I use it with Reatogo boot CD, although you can run it for hot backups
as well:
