I am looking for a REASONABLY priced software solution to backup my XP
system drive. If it can also do all the fancy stuff like scheduled backups
of modified files, etc, that is just fine, but NOT necessary.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Acronis True Image 10.0

I don't know what "REASONABLY priced" means to you, but to ME it means
that the software gets the job done.

TI 10.0 does that beyond your wildest imagination.

How about using the already existing backup utility included with XP?

Is it something I can use to back up my system drive, create a bootable
duplicate and be able to use that while I replace/repair my system hard
drive? I confess I assumed it would be underpowered for that type of
operation.

I'm very happy with Acronis True Image.

No, not bootable, but you can use it to create a true system recovery set of
DVDs.
Use the ASR (Automated System Recovery) option for the backup.
To recover, boot from the XP CD and use the screen prompts to boot to ASR
during setup, then follow the prompts to recover the system.

What about Norton Ghost? Any opinions?

I haven't used the latest version, so can't comment on it, but I think
Acronis True Image is *much* better, faster, and easier to use than any
version of Ghost I've tried.
