Drawing Canvas ?? Why?

Whenever I click on the text box icon to create a text box it always appears in a "Drawing Canvas" box. Then I have to wrestle with the text box to move it around. When I click on the text box it seems to be in conflict with the Drawing Canvas Box which always reappears and seems to hold the text box. My questions are
Why does the Drawing Canvas box appear.... I clicked on Text Box not Drawing Canvas or any drawing tool ????
How do I keep this box from appearing?? When I pull down "View" I have no way to get rid of it in the "Show Drawing Canvas" command
Thanks in advance

On the General tab of Tools | Options, disable the drawing canvas.

Technically, Word classes text boxes as drawing objects -- they're in
the drawing layer (floating) rather than in the text layer (in-line).

You can turn off the drawing canvas for all drawing objects. Go to
Tools > Options > Edit and clear the box for "Automatically create
drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes". You cannot enable it for
some kinds of drawing objects but not others.
