How can I determine the drag and fill feature will increment what is in the
cell.

When I put in a number and select only the one cell and drag it doesn't
increment. This happens when formatted as General, Text, or Number. If I
select two or more different cells then it does increment.

When I put in a date and select only the one cell and drag it does
increment.

If I put in a number with a dash in it, it will increment. Like 345-238

How can I make Excel increment when I need it to?

Why won't numbers increment?

Not a good answer, but I've given up trying to either figure out what excel will
do (or I've given up trying to remember what excel did the last time).

If I'm not completely sure what I'm doing, I'll right click and drag. When I
release the button, I get to see a bunch of options.

By not having to remember as much, I can use my brain for important stuff like:
Roger Maris hit 61 home runs in '61.

If a value doesn't naturally increment like if you put 1 in a cell and copy
down, if you hold down the ctrl key and copy down it will increment. If it
is something that naturally increment whether it is from a custom or another
list like Jan then if you hold down ctrl and copy it will not increment..

Think of it this way

If you put 1 in a cell, what would you presume would be the nex
numbers in a sequence? 1 2 3 4 5 or 1 3 5 7 9 or 1 11 21 31, exce

But the only way I can see that it didn't increment is to do it once and fail.
(Yeah, I could actually _learn_ how it works, but that's too hard and I'm too
old!)

I'd just rather right click and do it once.

And another reason that I like the rightclick and drag technique is that I can
see all the options that I could choose.
