I am having a problems with the downloads coming from microsoft - I have a
vaild Windows XP professional and the security updates will not install - I
downloaded them but they try to install and fail - Any suggetions?

I have had that problem myself on more than one occasion. I found that the
solution was to click on Windows Update. If anything is available, then
download using the web page. Ignore any yellow shield in your task bar that
indicates that updates have been downloaded and are ready to install. If you
use that route, then they will fail to install. I have no idea why this
happens. It is just my experience. Use the web page to conduct the
installation, and then reboot.

The yellow shield is okay to use on its own to support a download and
installation, if the shield has appeared in your task bar without any work on
your part.

Please let me know if this works for you,

Thanks for replying! I am trying that now - However I get the following:
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

Cannot download

That is my problem I guess - But I do have a valid copy of XP or it will
tell me so...

Give us the errors you see - or any clue what-so-ever as to what happens
when you try.

Also - if you download the 'IT Professional' version of the update and try
to run it from your machine - what happens?

Have you looked in the Event Log for the errors being reported there?

What Service Pack are you at now?

Beyond you giving us more information - you can try the following...

I suggest doing the following - perhaps in safe mode if it gives you trouble
in normal mode (do normal first) - and seeing if it fixes whatever problem
you have...

I'm going to give you a response that should cover most bases. It is not
mine - but it may do the trick for you...
(It covers a lot of bases.)

Reboot your computer and have nothing open before you start the steps....
Just log in and follow them, then when it has you rebooting - first thing
you should try is visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and seeing
what happens (in Internet Explorer.) Please come back and report!

3. After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad window.
Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.
4. Click Start, Run, type:
C:\register.bat and press Enter to run the commands I have pasted.

The Process may take some time.
After this restart your computer and try Windows Update.

also, one the error messages I get is this - I went into update history:

0x8007F01F

I am sorry about all the posts!

Thanks for replying to me shenan!

However, when I added new storage hard drives along with a new hard drive
for my operating system. My operating system hard drive took on the Letter
F: - Is that Ok? OR is that my problem?

Shenan,

I did the following and I get this error halfway through:

DFA180.tmp is corrupt and unreadable in F:|docs...\Blake..\...
perfrom chkdsk

So i performed chkdsk by going to CMD

And i get the following:

F:\Documents and settings\Blake Somerville\chkdsk
The type of the file system is NTFS.

That was it - What do I do now?

Oh nevermind - I get it, i rebooted and the chkdsk utility worked and fixed
that. Should I do your list again now?

First Try this:
CleanUp your caches, internet files and delete cookies.

Then Open the windows Explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistributions\Download and the same with Updates,
remove all failed updates and the failed downloads from there.
Run disk clean up then Reboot your machine.
Do you have Anti-Virus or a third party-Firewall, Anti-spyware can corrupt
or interfere in the installation process try ti Disable it and perform the
installations of the updates.

HTH.

I suggest you post to the experts in the windows update newsgroup and
provide more relevant information such as the configuration of your system,
how you're accessing the internet, how you get the updates, and what error
messages you get when the installations fail.

Windows Update newsgroup on the web.
