What kind of file is it?
Right click, pick "properties." It should give you an extension there (if
you have extensions hidden, as they are by default.)
XLS = Excel. Go download a viewer from Microsoft's site (no, you can't
legally download the full program.) Alternately, download OpenOffice.

That message is fairly self-explanatory.

What are the 3 characters after the period in the file name?

If they are xls, it's an Excel spreadsheet, and you need to buy and
install Excel. Or you could try downloading and installing the MS Excel
viewer at http://tinyurl.com/13cg (for files created in Excel 97/2000).
I'm not sure, however, if the viewer will actually do calculations.
Other spreadsheet applications use other extensions. You can check at
http://www.filext.com/

In general, it's helpful to to have a file viewing program so you can at
least look at files without having to purchase the program that created
them. http://www.irfanview.com/index.htm is very good for graphics
files of many types, and it's free. Quick View Plus
http://tinyurl.com/4on6 reads a comprehensive list of files, but it's
not free ($35 for d/l).
