I am running IE 6.0 under WinME. For no apparent reason I can no longer
download anything from the net. I go through the motions, but I am not given
the opportunity to direct where the download should be saved to. The
download box appears and the file is transmitted to someplace, but
subsequent searches of my hard drive cannot find the file anywhere. As a
result I have now installed Mozilla to handle routine downloads such as
Windows Update. Mozilla performs admirably, but I want my IE back up and
running properly.

It is probably downloading to your temp file.

Go to the extension that you are trying to download under Control Panel >
Folder Options > File Types. Scroll down to your file type and highlight it.
Click Advanced and check "Confirm open after download"

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.
