I cannot download email attachments on windows mail. I am instructed to use
'set association control panel' Where is it and what does it do ?

(e-mail address removed) I have the same problem. Help. I can open attactments in
power point, media player; but can not
open if it is a pdf or doc file. I have tried to save onto desktop and open
from there--no good. I get a bunch of weird symbols or data in word. I
have adobe reader 8.1 and I assume all is well with it. I have vista home
basic. I have no trouble at all with windows mail otherwise. thankyou

You set file associations in Start - Default Programs

but I suspect you have a different problem.. because this won't help in
"downloading" attachments.
Are you able to download the attachment with the email, but not able to open
it?
Can you save the attachment to disk, and then open it there?

What type of file attachment is it? There are known problems opening .pdf
and .pps file attachments.

I don't know if this was sent correctly or not so am trying again. The
attachmens appear with the paperclip to open in
my e-mail. The problem I see so far is.pdf files and .docfiles. I open
and up comes the set association box. I did
go into default programs and set it that way; so far it doesn't work that
way either. I am a novice at all of this and really don't know how or what
to do. thankx

If you can't open PDF or DOC files from the desktop, that is not a
Windows Mail problem. You might try reinstalling Word and
Adobe Reader.

First of all.... do you have the programs required to open these files?

Microsoft Word is needed to edit .doc files. You have to purchase that, as
it's not included with Vista.

You can get a program to just read these files, if you don't need to edit
them.

Adobe Reader or Foxit is needed to open and read .pdf files.

A full version of Adobe Acrobat is needed to edit .pdf files.

Thank you for all the info. I re-installed Adobe Reader 8.1. Pre-installed
was Microsoft Works Word Processor;
probably is a stupid question but isn't that the "Word" program I need?? Is
Adobe reader the same as Adobe
Acrobat reader? Thankyou for your time and help
