downloading

I have xp home, with cable connection. Everything works fine except downloads. When I try to download, even with zonealarm update, it acts as though it will, but the save or run box never comes up and the bottom of the window says done. My security settings are set to default, it's not the firewall or anti-virus ( I tried it w/ them disabled). It does the same with other websites as well. HELP ME PLEASE!

What are you downloading music..? data..? and what program are you using to
download. Turn zone alarm off just for a test.
 
I can't download any new programs from (for example) C/net or anyone else for that matter. Or download updates for programs that I already have. I turned off zonealarm and my anti-virus to check them, But it was working ok before when I used them anyway. I tried to download a xvid codec from a website last night to no avail.
