Having just fired up my laptop after a 9 month rest and installed a batch of
XP Pro SP3 Windows updates, I find that I can't download from IE or FF. The
dls appear to start but just then just hang (tried from various sites with
same result). Any ideas what the might be causing this?

Hi Marc,

In the Firefox group there was a report a few months back regarding some
updates and internet connectivity. Are you able to access the internet,
but just not the ability to download?

Check your firewall permissions, as you may have to remove and then add
your browser again. Browser updates can cause firewall issues.

Report back,

Terry R.

What updates did you install?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Internet connectivity ok, downloading was the only problem.

I get the same result with the firewall disabled.

Update: I just tried it now (after the problem occurred
yesterday) and found that IE seems to work ok but FF still
doesn't, so that's a start!

However, I updated FF yesterday (along with the firewall and
AV + about 25 Windows patches) so I might try reinstalling
FF when I have a bit of time to see if that fixes it.

About 25 Windows patches (but not IE8 or Defender) along
with updates for FF, Outpost Pro FW and Anvira AV.

Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

As above (the AV is freeware and FW is lifetime licence). No
other anti-anything running.

No way!

But as per my note in reply to Terry, IE now seems to be
working but not FF which I will reinstall when I have some
time to see if that helps.

As I said before, this happened on my laptop which I don't
use very often (hadn't been on for about 9 months) but I've
never had this kind of problem on any the various desktop
pc's I've had over the years.

Reinstalling FF rarely does any good. The problem might be in the FF
profile. You could try creating a new profile and see if the issue
exists. Or it could be an extension or add-on. Try starting FF in FF
Safe Mode to see if you can download.
