BACKGROUND: XP Home Edition came preloaded on this SONY
VAIO PCG-FX 340. It's only available via System Recovery.

QUESTION: If (should) I do a reformat & reinstall, is it
possible to download SP2, how?

Not certain that I understand your question, but I'll take
a whack at it. Firstly, don't reformat and reinstall
unless you absolutely have to; why waste your time? If
you've had the computer for a while, you'll lose
everything that you added or updated since starting to use
it. The System Recovery CD won't have all of the XP
updates (assuming that you've installed them), and it will
have all of the software that may not have been any use to
you. You don't need to reformat the disk to install SP2.

Downloading SP2 is enabled by Windows Update via IE, so
there's no reason that you wouldn't be able to update to
SP2 even if you were to reformat back to the Recovery CD.
Let Windows Update do the work: When you're connected to
the Windows Update site, it will tell you what needs to be
updated, regardless of the state of your XP configuration.

Hope this helps.
