Downloaded messages do not appear in inbox

When I click on Send/Receive, not all the messages downloaded appear in my
inbox. i.e: If I am told that 2 of 2 messages are being downloaded, I then
find that only one new message will appear in my inbox. If i am told 3 of 3,
then only 2messages appear in my inbox.
why is this - do i need to adjust a setting somewhere?

Told by what? The status dialog window in Outlook? Or the mail count
displayed on the Fisher-Price login screen in Windows XP (which can get
out of sync)?

Did you check your view to make sure you are displaying all messages?
Do you have rules that move messages to other folders or deletes them?
