They haven't released anything, its the Network Install of SP2, this was
been on Microsoft.com for how long now?

Softpedia has released the XP Home SP2 on their website. You may download
it from http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/13/9/13-9-177.shtml (click
download and it will start - 266MB)
Why? The MS site is not having any serious bandwidth issues. I can still
download SP2 at 120KBps on a 1Mbps connection. Also, the Softpedia version
claims to be build 2180. The version I downloaded from MS was build 2158.

Dodgy if you ask me!

Chris, this is actually the real SP2. If you read the description under the
name it sais it is the official Sp2 home edition update. I installed this
and it isn't that other program you mentioned.

It states Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2) provides an enhanced security
infrastructure that defends against viruses, worms and hackers, along with
increased manageability and control for IT professionals and an improved
experience for users.

even shows screen shots as well.

The "real" SP2? It has a different build number? And another thing is that
there is not a specific "Home" SP2. There is only an XP SP2.

Get it from Microsoft - otherwise you don't know what you are downloading!

Oh well ... it *must* be OK then!! Not!

As I said before, MS has no bandwidth issues from across the pond, so I
doubt it has over there either. Why risk getting such an important update
from a 3rd party?

Why would you download it from a source other than Microsoft - even if you
trust the other site?

2158 is the build time, not the build number. 2180 is the RTM build
number.

OK ... so where do I get it to show me that I have build 2180? When I was
running RC2, it displayed 2149 in the same position. And on the ms sp2 beta
site, it was always referred to as build 2149. And then as build 2158 when
the RTM was available?

Just before 10pm seems a strange time to be building a Service Pack. And
even stranger when they wait until a little bit later each night for each
successive build!

And MS has been going after websites hosting the Service Pack without their
permission, so all you did was be a snitch.

Sorry ... meant the MS SP2 beta newsgroup. I.e.
microsoft.private.xpsp2.general.

The SP2 CD, for those that ordered early, are arriving. I
received mine today.
