I purchased a Dell computer about 3 years ago and it came
with Microspft XP Home Edition and I need to know which
patch to download. I downloaded a patch from the
newspaper address to stop the leaking. But I still
receive pop ups stating I am still putting out the IP and
other important information and that I am wide open for
an attact then it gives me an e-mail address to stop the
pop ups. I am afraid it may be a hox.

Thanks for any and all help

How did you download something from the newspaper?

Enable XP's built in Firewall, called the Internet Connection Firewall, it
should stop the popups

Dont send any email to that address unless you want a ton of SPAM

If you are using Win XP and AOL, you are not alone. While
awaiting AOL 9.0, I simply disable the messenger
function. Good luck.

Hi Waitak,

by disabling the service you are still wide open to any attack from
Internet. You have RPC ports open and this is the service in which latest
_critical_ security flaws ware discovered. This means anyone can poke
around...

Also with RPC wide open I can quite easily get list of all your users from
your PC, services that you are running and shares that you have enabled.

First problem (RFC security flaw) can be fixed with patch, second problem is
a bit harder.

That's why I so strongly recommend using (personal) firewall. To keep all
the bad packets out of your PC. You can use _any_ personal firewall you feel
comfortable with. There are quite a few very decent ones that are for free...
