Do download accelerators make any significant difference to ADSL downloads?

Can't say with certainty. What I do know is:
I use Flashget v4 and under ADSL, megabytes of stuff come down
so fast it's unbelievable; it seems to use my full 2mb line. When I
use Windows to d/l files, it's noticeably slower.

Example: one file of 25794k (ie 25mb) d/l in 1m 50s using Flashget
on a 2mb ADSL line. That's fast...

OK. I've seen that Flashget function but afaik it exists only to
monitor what URL syntax is going through IE so it knows when to
activate/copy/paste the URL into its own d/l program.
Remember at this point Flashget isn't even running.

If I click a website link containing, say, 'something.zip', Flashget
bursts into life and asks me if I want to d/l using Flashget.
Ditto for all other filetypes which I have specified in the options.

'Hijackthis' has picked up this Flashget feature before but afaik
it's not spyware. I'm not aware that Flashget actually sends any
data back to mother.

OK.

I tried Download Express and Freshdownload. Firefox was faster without
them. The fastest I tried was Opera's own, but I don't much like Opera.

The interesting thing about Flashget is that it integrates with
Avant Browser (I use this) in the same way as it does with IE
and offers the same right-click options.
But it is a chargeable proggy ...so that puts some folks off unless
you can get a 'free serial' from somewhere! ;-)

Avant browser IS IE wearing different clothes, however all the download
managers integrate or they are not worth having

I generally like the Firefox download manager, but on large files I have
found it better to use DLExpert, because it seems to me that Firefox
doesn't resume a partial download when interrupted, but instead restarts
it from the beginning, thus wasting all the time used in getting the
part already retrieved. Have you experienced this?

I guess I've been lucky and not had a 'broken' download since broadband. I
suspect you will be right when it happens.

Yeah that is my experience and unless they've changed it with the recent
versions it isn't a fully featured download manager. In fact I didn't
find it any more use than the standard Windows download option. I'm
trying out Free Download Manager with Firefox now. So far so good.

Keep us all posted. I timed DEx and Freshd by hand on an 8Mb download.

Over the years I have used FlashGet, DlExpert, DownloadExpress, Fresh
Download, StarDownloader, and have now settled on Free Download Manager
which is by far the best of the bunch and works well with FireFox (and
IE). When using a download manager with FF I prefer to use it in
combination with either the DownloadWith or FlashGot extensions rather
than as a direct plugin.

I did a hand timing with a couple of those and came to the conclusion that
they make almost no significant difference on broadband. I should, perhaps,
have done that before I asked the original question. I just assumed someone
else might have done it first to save me time.
Ho hum!
