download limit for users?

Friend of mine has 3 teenage kids all sharing his computer for internet
access. Over time they are gradually downloading more and more, and
recently they've been blowing their 1Gb monthly limit and their
connection speed gets throttled for the rest of the month.

He has laid down some rules with them, but is still exceeding the limit
monthly - so they're upgrading to 4Gb/month. I reckon in time that'll
start getting exceeded, but anyway...

At present they all just use the same user account when online. I was
thinking there must be some software that keeps track of amounts
downloaded. He could set up user accounts for all kids and they'd have
to log in.

Anyone know of such software for his WinXP (Home Edition)?

Big misteak.

Each user should have his/her own login and user account. Knowing
teenage kids and what they do on the Internet, I think I would take this
computer and start over with a fresh install, and make sure each person
has a personal account and is trained to log in and log out as
appropriate. The parent should assign strong passwords that only s/he
and the individual child knows, and the children should not be
Administrator users, nor be allowed to change a password.

Which of course they can't if they are not admins and the appropriate
setting checked!

Of course. Just emphasizing that the "appropriate setting checked" is
made as well.

Tell the kids not to share their passwords with each other. (Is is
possible to teach that to kids?)

GetRight http://www.getright.com/ a download manager will do this, one
of it's options is to keep a log of all downloads. - the date/time,
download, and where it came from

I agree. Personally I don't have kids so I'm glad I don't have this
problem (yet).

The separate user account idea you suggest is what I was getting at in
my OP. Don't know yet if any of the software recommended will log
different users - will get him to test and see.

Thanks. I don't think it's so much where it came from, but more *who*
is doing all the downloading - that's why I suggested separate user
accounts for the kids.

Good start, and yes you can teach them not to share passwords... by
blocking the account till the first of the next month when the download
limit is exeeded, Programs like NetLimiter Free
(http://www.netlimiter.com) for stats on bandwith usage, and NetVeda's
free (registration required though) for personal use Safety.Net (no .NET
enviroment necessary)with it's user based settings could be a very nice
addition to it... one admin click and the user is disconnected from the
Internet... Admin account can be PW protected, admin can log on to
Safety.Net from any user account (as long as you remember the password
;-) ) available from http:www.netveda.com (do not select the Pro version,
it's $ ware!)

In Windows XP: My Computer > right click C: > Properties > Quota >
Enable Quota management. Set a miserable limit for each user account,
assuming of course that the brats have separate limmited accounts.
already

That's the "disk quota"... if they would be clever enough (and they *will
be* :-( )to remove files (for instance burn them to CD) then the object of
what the OP was aiming at either never would be reached, or in a loooong
time (while the BW quotum / month still would be exceeded!)

I have seen exactly what the OP is looking for; unfortunately that type of
software is OT in the NG

Big misteak.

Each user should have his/her own login and user account.

I'd disagree with this, only because of support issues. There's nothing
wrong with everybody using the same account, as long as it's not the
Administrator account.

Knowing what kids do on the internet, I'd rather have one user account to
set up. It's a pain in the ass cleaning, or setting up safely, four or five
user accounts instead of one.

It's also much easier to see whats been going on in the wide open internet.
That is paramount. The kids privacy from each other is secondary to my
knowing what it is they are doing.

...until that one account gets hosed.

With separate accounts, you would quickly find out which kid was doing
the bad stuff, don't you think?

Yes, but the parent will not know which kid did what. It's a bit of
extra work for the parent, but I wouldn't want to blame all of them for
the wrongdoings of just one.

So could you post it with [OT] in the Subject or email me (address is
valid). I assume by OT you mean it's shareware or commercial?

Thanks.
