Download/Install Problem

I'm running (factory installed) Vista Ultimate 64-bit on a
new (3 month old) HP w1907 desktop computer. HP Update
recommends downloading and installing "NVIDIA Unified
Graphic Update", 74.4 MB, taking an estimated 4.3 hours on
my dial-up connection. Reason given has something to do
with recovery from sleep mode - which I never use.
Nevertheless, I decided to download and install the update.

I have tried this 4 times, and each time, after 4-6 hours of
running time (I let it run while I sleep or am away from the
house for several hours) the message is that
"Download/installation failed", with no further explanation.
My dial-up connection has not failed during that time, since
my computer has remained on-line in each of the 4 instances.

(I have not contacted the HP Technical Support staff with
this issue, since it has never been able to understand and
reply meaningfully to questions about 3 other issues.)

Any enlightenment appreciated. (I have no idea what NVIDIA
Unified Graphic software is, or what it does, but my
computer seems to be running just fine.)

Many thanks.

I'd probably not bother with the update as your machine is working fine.

However if you do want to download it...I suggest getting a download manager
as even if the download fails and has to be restarted, at least you can
continue where it left off.
I suspect the problem is due to the slow speed of your dial-up connection.

CWLee,

If your system is performing properly there is no need for you to
install an updated driver or any updated firmware.
I'm surprised HP would sell you a computer with an x64 based OS due to
the lack of x64 programs and all the support headaches that go with an x64
based system. Dell will not sell an x64 based OS to the general public but
they will sell it to a business. This was my experience. I asked Dell to
build me a system with Vista Home Premium X64 and they refused.
In any event, if your system is functioning properly and you are
suffering no hardware problems you should leave things as they are. You can
update if you wish. However, you may find yourself saddled with unexpected
problems.
I've never owned an HP computer because HP would not assist me when I
had problems with a previous HP product but from reading these discussion
groups it appears the standard answer from HP when trying to troubleshoot a
problem is always either "reinstall your OS" or "it's a Vista problem, call
Microsoft for support." For this reason alone you should leave things as
they are.

Hello "CWLee":
At some point you will want to upgrade Vista to SP1 because it does
improve the performance of Vista. The graphics upgrade you're being asked to
install may be necessary before you can install SP1 without problems. I
don't think it was specifically listed by Microsoft as being a "problem" but
they do mention that they are working on hardware "drivers" that will be
needed for SP1 to install properly.
I do remember that there were lots of problems with Nvidia graphics drivers
working correctly in Vista.

Thanks for responding. I had already downloaded and
installed SP-1, about a week ago, and everything continued
to work fine afterwards, just as it did before.

Based on comments by others, I'm re-evaluating whether I
want to find a solution to this download problem or not. I
have been able to download Microsoft updates over my dial-up
connection without a problem, and my system is completely up
to date as far as "important" and "recommended" updates is
concerned. I have not bothered to download language packs,
and other items that relate to functions I do not use, such
as games and encryption.

Thanks again.
