download headers only in outlook

When retrieving my email the first message is automatically displayed. I want
to decide which one to display first. I don't want a message to be
automatically displayed after downloading...thanks

Is it being displayed int he Reading (or Preview, depending on version)
Pane? If so, turn off the Reading Pane.

Don't use the Preview Pane.

Use the AutoPreview pane (shows in plain-text only the first few lines of
each message).

Use Tools -> Send & Receive -> Send & Receive Settings -> Define Send &
Receive Groups, pick your group, pick your account, set to download headers
only for that account. From now on, you will have to mark which messages
that you want to download (because all you'll get are their headers) and
then select to download them.
