I received an automatic upgrade to my operating system, Windows XP
Professional last night. After installing, I attempted to download a file as
usual, but the box requesting whether I wanted to run the application or save
to disk never appeared. After several tries, I closed the application, and
discovered that my desktop had several new icons, all pointing to the file I
downloaded.
I found that deleting all duplicate icons but one, and dragging the
remaining one into the folder usually reserved for these files did move the
file there and the icon left my desktop. but how can I restore the old
procedure?

If you were downloading the file from within an application, open that
application's PROPERTIES or OPTIONS area and look for an item that
specifies where downloads are stored. Point it to the directory (folder)
of your choice.
