We purchased a lap top at Christmas with Windows XP on and
it would be more convenient, in terms of other software,
if we had 2000 on the machine. What is the best way to
move to 2000 from xp?

Andy

You'll have to reformat the drive and perform a "clean install":

The Windows 2000 CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows 2000 to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

2. Insert your Windows XP 2000 in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows 2000.

5. After Windows 2000 is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates", starting with SP4.

6. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows 2000 compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Greetings --

There is no "rollback" to Win2K.

To replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you'll have to boot from the
appropriate boot disk, format the hard drive, and install. There is
no supported downgrade path or technique.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and/or format the system partition as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Do you mean WinME instead of Win2k, as I've not found a single software
package "Designed for Win2k" that would not run on WinXP Pro (although I'm
sure there may be some), now WinME is a whole different bucket of worms?
And yes, for Win9x OS's (ME, 98, 98SE) you'll need to format the drive and
reinstall from scratch (clean install).

Please be aware that, if you do decide to do this (and I cannot see why
you'd need to - everything I had running under 2000 runs perfectly well
under XP) you will invalidate any - and, most likely, all - warranties
conferred on the unit at the point-of-sale. This means that you will no
longer be entitled to any form of support, either software or hardware. Can
you afford to replace the necessary parts should something fail?
