Double Monitor on Notebook?

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a notebook computer that has a single VGA
output that I normally use with a multimedia projector. I've recently
connected a second monitor but can only display on Monitor1 or 2, or the
same thing on 1 and 2,
HOW DO I SPLIT THE SCREENS so that I can different applications on each
monitor? THANKS
 
I've managed to get this working but now the system seems to have slowed
down considerable now that I've extended my screen is this normal?

No. I have two monitors on my Dell Inspiron 8500 notebook.
(The internal and an external.) No problems. May be your
drivers.
