Suddenly double clicking the file icon opens Excel with no worksheet and the data doesn't load (application has been used for over a year; failure to successfully open began about a week ago). We have Windows XP with Office XP. Word documents successfully open by double clicking the icon. Files can be opened using the Open command within Excel, but not through a file shortcut nor through Windows Explorer. Does anyone have any thoughts?

If you are talking about a desktop icon. I just made another one by right
click on desktop>new>shortcut>browse>to

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\EXCEL.EXE"

Try this Sharon

Tools>Options>General uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

On the Windows Taskbar
Close Excel
Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

The only time I've had this happen is if I had previously opened an
Excel file in Internet Explorer (from clicking on a link on a web
page), and the it was intermittent. Quitting IE allowed me to
double-click on Excel files and open them again. Apparently if IE loads
Excel to display a file, it does not close out of Excel properly. Ah,
the joys of application integration!

Also, closing Excel files by choosing File>Close instead of clicking
the "x" in the upper, right-hand corner seems to reduce the occurance
of this problem (I used to think it was the same thing, but apparently
it is not!).

Thanks for the suggestion, Ron ... the suggestion to uncheck "Ignore other Applications" seems to work.
