Double clicking a folder does a "search" instead of "open"

Ever since I re-installed WindowsXP PRO, I can't double
click on folders to "open" them. Instead, it opens
a "search results" window. How can I fix this?

Perhaps the information found on the following website will help:

Search Companion Starts If You Double-Click a Folder

Cary, I tried changing the registry as per the
instructions from the site you recommended. However, it
still doesn't open the folder unless I right click and
select OPEN. Is there anything else I can do?

It should work. Or, try "regsvr32 /i shell32" in the RUN box. [Credit goes to David Candy]

Start - Run - regedit
Open to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
and in the right pane double click on (Default) and enter the explicit
four characters
none

Repeat at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

OK, it worked this time. What I did wrong the first time
was that I went to the next subfolder beyond shell and
made those changes. Then I went back and changed it in
shell, and it worked! Thanks a bunch, everyone.

I am having a problem that when I click on a folder on the Desktop, that the Search Results thing comes up. It doen't open the folder. I looked in the Registry Editor under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell but I do not see the \Direcory or \shell. What can I do

Thanks.

Here is a 4 step Fix

1. Go to "MY Computers"
2. Choose Tools>"Folder Options">"File Types"
3. Select "Drives" and click the "Advanced" button

I had only one entry under "Actions" and it was "Find"

4. Click "New" and enter "explore" and "C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe" respectively in the two boxes. [WITHOUT QUOTES]

Click OK and this should fix this issue.

Good Luck!!
