double-click on desktop activates modem

A strange thing has happened when I installed XP over my
Window ME. When I double click any folder on my desktop,
the folder opens AND so does my IE modem logon window.
Could this be a parasite or worm imbedded in the XP
system on my PC?

Its as if I have activated a request to logon to the
internet. I could double click a document folder and
BOOM the modem becomes activated. Looks very suspicious.

I am also experiencing pop-up windows that I have never
seen before. Most are associated with
a "TrafficSyndicate...."

Is this a MS problem or have I been infected?

Get and install the following freeware ( no spyware )

AdAware 6 from lavasoft and
SpyBot

Both can be found using google.
