This looks like an extremely cool .net project to front end the open
source indexer, Lucerne, as an api:

The code project article is just an introduction to DotLucene (not
Lucerne, btw - you won't get many relevant hits if you search for the
wrong name). DotLucene doesn't need "opening up" as an API - it's a
framework with an API already.
