i am trying to flash my dvd. it says i need do that from true ms-dos . how
do i get to ms-dos. i think i was told that you press crtl or f8 upon start
up. do those key strokes get me where i need be? i do not have a xp disc,
only the recovery discs that cam with my toshiba

Hi,

The instructions you are following are probably for a Win9x system. For
WinXP, there is no key to press upon startup to access "true dos" because it
doesn't exist. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for loading the
firmware from a boot floppy. You will need to place the files you need on
the floppy as well because you will not be able to access the hard drive
unless it is using FAT32.

DVDs have drivers installed... you "flash the BIOS" and you
need to do that using the procedure required by your
hardware. Sometimes there are BIOS update .exe programs
that will run from Windows, generally you can flash the BIOS
by creating a bootable floppy and having the BIOS update
file on that floppy. You boot the computer and it updates
the BIOS.

If the power fails or there is a problem during the process,
you will need expert help to fix it, maybe even a new
motherboard.

You need to be more explicit describing what you need/want
to do? I am assuming you meant BIOS rather than DVD but if
you post the make/model of computer, the DVD, perhaps you
will get a better answer.

Read the reply to the other copy of this question! WinXP can produce
bootable (vintage) DOS diskettes

start, help 'DOS diskette', read the first entry.

Well, you can update the firmware in the DVD/CDROMs (if the
manufacturer supports it), so he may be attempting that and NOT a BIOS
flash...but his story isn't clear enough to deduce what he wants to do

Hey Eric - why don't you wait more than three hours before you ask for
help again? People here don't usually reward impatience.
